These words come from Shakespeare's play As you like it (act 2, scene 7: The forest) and refer to holly's life-giving power even in the harshness of winter. They also inspired Walter Crane to make this delightful watercolor painting of a 'holly man' (see Holly, Flowers from Shakespeare's Garden, c. 1906)
