Fun fact: van Leeuwenhoek and the simple microscope he used to obtain his famous drawings of animalcules actually came after the invention of the compound microscope. Van's single-lens device was the better instrument because lens makers did not yet grasp of the principles of optics. In short: compound microscopes sucked well into the 1800s.
