The prayer is said to have been composed by St. Patrick in the 5th century as a form of spiritual protection. Legend has it that St. Patrick and his companions used the prayer as they faced danger during their missionary work. The term "lorica" refers to a type of protective prayer or incantation, and in this context, the Lorica of St. Patrick is a poetic invocation of God's presence and protection in various aspects of life.
