Isle of the Dead by Arnold Bocklin, Symbolism Art Jigsaw Puzzle
Isle of the Dead, third version (German: Die Toteninsel) (1883) by Arnold Bocklin is a vintage Victorian Era Symbolism fine art macabre mythology painting. A human ghost in a boat moving towards an island with cypress trees and tall cliffs of rock surrounded by the calm sea ocean.
All versions of Isle (Island) of the Dead depict a desolate and rocky islet seen across an expanse of dark water. A small rowboat is just arriving at a water gate and seawall on shore. An oarsman manoeuvres the boat from the stern. In the bow, facing the gate, is a standing figure clad entirely in white. Just behind the figure is a white, festooned object commonly interpreted as a coffin.
The tiny islet is dominated by a dense grove of tall, dark cypress trees — associated by long-standing tradition with cemeteries and mourning — which is closely hemmed in by precipitous cliffs. Furthering the funerary theme are what appear to be sepulchral portals and windows penetrating the rock faces. The overall impression conveyed by the imagery is one of both hopeless desolation and tense expectation.
About the artist:
Arnold Böcklin (1827-1901) was a painter specialising in Symbolism and influenced by Romanticism overlapping with the Pre-Raphaelites. They often portray mythological, fantasy figures along classical architecture constructions (revealing often an obsession with death) and creating a strange, fantasy world.

I got this image in 110 pieces as I cannot commit to large puzzles. This one took me about an hour and was fairly easy. Perhaps 252 pieces would have better suited me for a little more complexity. This is not my favourite sugar skull as I prefer more girly colours like hot pink, reds and purples but I enjoyed doing this one. There is a lot of detail in the image and it was interesting to do. I don't think I will buy the larger puzzle count just because there are other sugar skull images that I much prefer.
Again very good quality puzzle and durable storage box that fits very well on small bookcase. The image was well positioned on this one so who ever printed this one got it pretty bang on.

I like puzzles but can't commit to thousands of pieces. I chose this one in 110 pieces because I wanted a challenge that could be completed in a few hours. This one took approx 3.5 hours to complete. The image is pretty uniform throughout so may seem daunting but some of the jigsaw pieces are quite unique which helps. You definitely need a good eye for detail and this puzzle is challenging and engaging giving the satisfaction of completion after a relatively short commitment of time.
I do not like thousands of pieces because I don't have the time or motivation to keep going back to a puzzle which needs to be stored and moved and this can result in a loss of pieces.
The box the puzzle is supplied in is good quality and will store the puzzle safely for a long time. The box also fits on one of my small bookcase so storage is very easy. The puzzle print is slightly smaller than the image on the box and this makes orientation of the puzzle harder. The image is of really good quality though and I'm happy with the quality of this aspect.

I bought this image in 110 pieces because I like puzzles I can complete in a few hours. This one took me about 1.5 hours. It was surprisingly challenging in that in the nebular section of the image the pieces were difficult to orientate. It was difficult to gauge which pieces were right without trying them and sometimes I thought certain pieces wouldn't fit and they did. It must be the way the image is made up that it tricks the eye. I definitely found it harder than I thought it would be so yes it's a challenge.
As always very good quality puzzle in a very durable box that stores really well on my small bookcase. The image was well orientated on the puzzle so I would say the printer got this one pretty bang on. Very good quality image.
