Buchanan's diplomatic career included serving as Minister to Russia and Minister to the United Kingdom, where he gained experience in international relations. His work on the controversial Ostend Manifesto, which advocated the acquisition of Cuba, raised his national profile. Buchanan's long and distinguished political career culminated in his election as President in 1856.
