'Japanese Laborers on Spreckelsville Plantation, Maui', c. 1885 by Joseph Dwight Strong. The son of a minister, Strong spent his childhood years in Honolulu before moving to California. He returned with his wife to Hawaii in 1882, where King David Kalakaua appointed him governmental artist to the Kaimiloa expedition to Samoa.
