Using anachronism and the personification of “Joy” as a beautiful woman in a modern-day beauty pageant, JOY THE IMMORTAL BELOVED is a three-part triptych comprising JOY, INSPIRES and MUSIC which depicts snapshots of Ludwig van Beethoven drawing inspiration from his muse to compose his famous “Ode to Joy.” Much like the universal appeal of a gorgeous woman, the beauty of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is widely appreciated by many diverse audiences. Placing the composer out of context in our pop culture-centric world serves as a metaphor for Beethoven’s enduring popularity and rockstar-like status, while the fusion of highbrow and lowbrow elements illustrates that classical music is not just for elitist snobs. All of this is achieved while playing upon the mystery surrounding Beethoven’s so-called Immortal Beloved.
