Double sixteen-petaled chrysanthemum pillowcase

The crest of the Japanese Imperial Family / Following the Northern and Southern Courts period, as the crests of samurai families developed, the crest was bestowed upon distinguished warriors by the Emperor, and samurai came to desire it as a symbol of their warrior status. Initially, however, it was not permission to use it as a family crest, but merely allowed the wearing of imperially-bestowed clothing. The use of the chrysanthemum crest was permitted for families such as the Ashikaga, Oda, and Toyotomi, but there were many instances of its unauthorized use. Toyotomi Hideyoshi disliked this and twice prohibited the use of the chrysanthemum crest, a public crest, in 1581 and 1595. During the Edo period, daimyo and shrines and temples misused it to enhance their authority, and it was even used as actors' crests and trademarks for merchant families.
