Kansas State Capitol USA Postcard
The Kansas State Capitol, located in Topeka, is the seat of government for the U.S. state of Kansas. Completed in 1903 after 37 years of construction, the French Renaissance-style building is renowned for its magnificent copper dome, which is topped by a bronze statue named 'Ad Astra' depicting a Kansa warrior. The Capitol's interior features elaborate murals by native Kansan artist John Steuart Curry, including the famous 'Tragic Prelude' depicting abolitionist John Brown.
A visit to the Capitol offers a look into Kansas's rich political and artistic history. The building is distinct among state capitols as it still allows public access to the dome via 296 steps that lead to an open-air cupola, providing panoramic views of the surrounding city of Topeka. The dome is unique because it is one of the few capitols in the United States that can be toured all the way to the top.
