Kazan Cathedral Russia Postcard

The Kazan Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan, stands as one of the most iconic landmarks in St. Petersburg. Built between 1801 and 1811 by architect Andrey Voronikhin, its most striking feature is the magnificent semi-circular colonnade consisting of 94 Corinthian columns that curve outward towards Nevsky Prospekt. Inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, the cathedral was intended to be Russia’s primary Orthodox church and later became a monument to Russian victory over Napoleon. Inside, the cathedral serves as a sacred space and a memorial, housing the tomb of Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov. The interior is equally breathtaking, featuring a vast dome and floors covered in intricate mosaics of Karelian marble. Today, it remains a functioning place of worship and a central hub for visitors exploring the historic heart of the city, symbolising both the spiritual depth and the grand imperial history of St. Petersburg.
