About "Khutzeymateen ~ Sacred Places" by Skye Ryan-Evans © Another of Skye's watercolour and gouache scenes depicting the sacredness of the Pacific Northwest of Canada and the Alaska region. The Totem Pole is in the Haida style and features Eagle, Raven and other animals significant to the Haida culture. Beneath the totem searching for fish and shell-fish on the rocky coastal shoreline, is a young Black Bear. In the distance a Deer stag can be seen watching the Bear and keeping a safe distance. Above flies Raven, the most important animal in the Haida culture and hence above the scene in his proper position. The great Khutzeymateen region is home to the largest wild Bear sanctuary in the World and has many Grizzly and Black Bear residents cohabiting in mostly peaceful co-operation. Coastal Wolves also live here and are the only known Wolf species to swim long distances between islands. A wonderful place to visit if you want to see Nature in its highest form.
