The koala, also known as the koala bear, is an arboreal herbivorous marsupial native to Australia. It is the only extant member of the Phascolarctidae family, and its closest living relatives are wombats. The koala lives on the mainland's eastern and southern coasts, in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. It is distinguished by its stout, tailless body and large head, which features round, fluffy ears and a large, spoon-shaped nose. The koala is 60-85 cm (24-33 in) long and weighs 4-15 kg (9–33 lb). The colour of the fur ranges from silver grey to chocolate brown. Northern populations of koalas are typically smaller and lighter in colour than their southern counterparts. These populations may be distinct subspecies, but this is debatable. Koalas prefer open Eucalyptus woodland because the leaves of these trees provide the majority of their diet. Koalas are sedentary and sleep up to twenty hours a day because their eucalypt diet has limited nutritional and caloric content. They are asocial animals, with only mothers and dependant offspring bonding.
