Kutna Hora. Panoramic view. Poster
Kutna Hora. Panoramic view. Travel. Europe. Czech Republic. Kutná Hora, former Kuttenberg, a town in the Central Bohemian Region, is the administrative centre of the Kutna Hora district. Located 60 km east of Prague, on the plateau of Kutna Hora at an altitude of 254 m above sea level. The town was founded in the first half of the 13th century. The centre of the mediaeval silver mining industry (in the thirteenth century, the mines of the town gave a third of the European silver mining), making the town the second richest in the Czech kingdom. It was the mines that caused the formation of the first mining villages, one of which was called "Cuthna Antiqua", which means "old monastic robe". One of the monks, according to legend, fell asleep on a nearby hill, and in a dream saw silver bars. When he woke up, he actually found them in the place indicated in the dream and covered this place with his cassock. Kutna Hora became the site of the first "silver fever" in Europe. The town is famous for its numerous monuments of Gothic architecture, including. Cathedral of St. Barbara 1388-1547 - the most famous architectural monument of Kutna Hora - the second largest and most significant gothic temple in the Czech Republic, built in the style of late (Vladislav) Gothic. The church in Sedlec or the Church of All Saints is a Gothic cemetery church in Sedlec, a district of the town of Kutna Hora, in the crypt of which is the largest in the Czech Republic an ossuary. Of greatest interest is the interior of the church, completely finished with human skulls and bones, for the design of which was used about 40,000 human skeletons. And also: the building of the Archdiocese (1594-1599), the Jesuit College (1667-1700), the Former Mint - Vlachsky (Italian) courtyard (XIII century), Baroque plague pillar (1713-1715) and several others. The historical centre of the town is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
