La Promenade by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, oil on canvas 1874-76, is a painting of a woman and two little girls in elegant dress walking around a pathway in a flower garden surrounded by lush, colourful plants and flowers, behind them a crowd relaxing in the open air. The woman, the children's nanny or mother, with long, strawberry blonde hair, wears a blue dress of deep, saturated ultramarine tones, while the two girls wear pale blue-green and pink dresses with little white bonnet caps. The subjects all bear relaxed, happy, warmly drawn facial expressions, which Renoir renders with great human sympathy. Renoir paints a luxuriant, richly coloured snapshot of modern life, reminiscent of the French Rococo painters, in quickly applied strokes of fluid colours, constructing a beloved masterpiece of French Impressionist art.
