Laguna Colorada Bolivia Postcard

Perched at over 14,000 feet in the Bolivian Altiplano, Laguna Colorada—or the Red Lagoon—is a shallow salt lake chraacterised by its deep crimson waters and white borax islands. It is a primary habitat for the rare James's flamingo, which was once thought to be extinct until being rediscovered in this remote, high-altitude wilderness. The thin mountain air and intense UV light make the colours of the landscape pop with incredible clarity. The deep red of the water, caused by red algae, serves as a stunning canvas for the delicate pink of the flamingos and the stark white of the salt deposits, all framed by the brown and ochre peaks of the Andes.
