Although I've never stayed in the Lake Yellowstone Hotel, I've enjoyed its public areas and grounds many times while staying in less grand accommodations nearby in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. The lobbies and dining rooms are beautiful with vintage charm. The Lake Yellowstone Hotel is the oldest hotel in Yellowstone National Park. Opened in 1891, the hotel sits on Yellowstone Lake. Yellowstone Lake is the largest freshwater lake above 7,000 feet (2,100 metres) in North America. The lake is 7,732 feet (2,357 m) above sea level and covers 136 square miles (350 km2) with 110 miles (180 km) of shoreline. This photograph was taken in September 2022, when the park was celebrating its150th birthday. A banner proclaiming this event hung on a lamppost near the rear entrance and in many other locations throughout the park that year. It was established by the 42nd U.S. Congress with the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872. Yellowstone was the first national park in the U.S. and is also widely held to be the first national park in the world.
