Legions Bridge, Prague, Czech Republic Poster

Legions Bridge, Prague, Czech Republic Poster

"Legions Bridge, Prague, Czech Republic" by Catherine Sherman The elegant stone Legions Bridge arches over the serene Vltava River with several small boats navigating the water in Prague, Czech Republic. In the background, historic buildings with red and green rooftops line the riverbank, set against a hilly landscape with a tower. Beyond is the more modern Jirasek’s bridge. There are 18 bridges in Prague across the Vltava river. The opening of the Legions Bridge took place ceremonially in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph on June 14, 1901. Then the bridge, like its predecessor, was called the "Bridge of Emperor Franz Joseph I". During its history, the bridge has changed names several times. The bridge received its current name in honour of the legions with the advent of the First Republic; during the occupation it was called "Smetana Bridge", and from 1960 until the Velvet Revolution – "May 1 Bridge". After the Velvet Revolution, the name "Bridge of the Legions" was returned to the bridge.
