Lord Street - North Side, Liverpool, 1798 Postcard

The image here is of Lord Street, North Side, in 1798. Although the image shows the then Lord Street as being well on the way to being the very busy thoroughfare it first became in Victorian times, it does have an interesting history before this. The road was originally laid out to allow the tenants of Lord Molyneux to travel from his orchard, through to the great heath. But when the tenants began to erect a bridge at the junction with Church Street, presumably to cross the pool, tensions then set in between the Mayor and his men, and his Lordship’s; with the mayor gaining early points by tearing down the wood and stones already in place. But this was soon sorted, Molyneux’s Lane came into being, then it was called Lord’s Lane, then eventually, as the street became busier with shops and businesses set up either side, and a considerable increase in traffic to boot, Lord Street was born. The image here is from a drawing by W.G. Herdman. It was first published in 1843; it is not certain if Mr Herdman’s work was a faithful copy of an earlier drawing from the time, or if compiled by him using other source documents.
