Love Letter Bicycle Playing Cards
Koibumi is an old term for a letter. While letters are put in envelopes these days, people used to tie them with a string, so the family crest is designed after the shape of a tied letter. The basic letter shape is often a long, thin piece of paper folded in half and tied in the middle to form a lump or a 'ku' shape. Some crests, like the 'Love Letter Crest', have a kanzashi hairpin added to the design (from 'The Complete Book of Family Crests' by Takasawa etc.)
