Mark Catesby Magnolia Collage w/ Essay on Flowers Card

Mark Catesby Magnolia Collage w/ Essay on Flowers Card

Both images in this collage have interesting histories. The engraving of the Magnolia was done for Mark Catesby's 1747 " Natural History of Florida, Carolina and the Bahama Islands," the first book on the flora and fauna of North America. The illustration was undertaken by Georg Dionysis Ehret at Catesby's invitation. Unlike Catesby, Ehret never visted North America and relied on samples sent back to Europe by ship. This watercolour actually depicts two different species of magnolia - the leaf of the cucumber tree (Magnolia acuminata) with the flower of the sweet bay (Magnolia virginiana) - suggesting that specimens had become separated en route from Virginia to England and were then incorrectly matched up. In the etched plate. The handwritten text is from an antique record ledger which we found at a New Hampshire flea market some 40 years ago. The words come from a famous essay on flowers by the Victorian writer Clara Balfour. We don't know whose handwriting it is, but it came from a Journal found in New Hampshire which was signed A. Johnson, "The Cold Water Advocate, A Journal Advocating Temperance in all Things."

I think it’s great how you can design your own cards and buy them and they’re not even expensive which is really good. The printing turned even better than I expected
