Matilda of Boulogne unexpectedly became Queen of England, when her husband Stephen took the throne on the death of his uncle, King Henry I. It lead to a civil war known as The Anarchy, with Matilda at one point leading hostage negotiations to get Stephen back after he was captured by the enemy.
Matilda's death left Stephen bereft. He ultimately disinherited their son William, and recognised Henry of Anjou as his heir to England.
