This mediaeval puzzle began as a beautiful mediaeval engraving by the great German Renaissance artist Martin Schongauer. It shows St. Michael slaying the devil. The devil is a scary Gothic beast with snake-like appendages. At the bottom of this artwork you can see the artist's initials. According to ancient tradition, an image of St. Michael protects us from evil, so that is one reason to have this in your home!
