Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge Postcard

The Mehmed Paša Sokolović Bridge is a historic monument of Ottoman civil engineering, spanning the Drina River in Višegrad. Completed in 1577 by the court architect Mimar Sinan on the orders of Grand Vizier Mehmed Paša Sokolović, the bridge features 11 majestic masonry arches and a central portal known as the sofa, which serves as a traditional meeting place. It represents a pinnacle of classical Ottoman architecture and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. Immortalised in the Nobel Prize-winning novel 'The Bridge on the Drina' by Ivo Andrić, the structure has borne witness to centuries of history, geopolitical shifts, and cultural synthesis. It remains a powerful symbol of connection between communities, standing resilient against both devastating floods and major historical conflicts, making it one of the most culturally significant landmarks in the Balkans.
