Beautiful vintage illustration of the Bishop's vestments during the Middle Ages - various Mitres, Garb, and Insignia. The mitre (or miter) is a type of headgear now known as the traditional, ceremonial head-dress of bishops. The mitres depicted are of the type "pretiosa (precious)" of the 14th Century, which are usually richly decorated and sometimes equipped with jewels and semi-precious stones and embroidered with gold thread. Bishops also carry a pastoral staff (crozier or crosier), and they wear a ring, chasuble, and Pontifical gloves. From Racinet's "History of Costume" (1888). HTM Images
