Mobile: The Birthplace of Mardi Gras The central part of this poster uses a photograph of a float in the Conde Cavaliers parade during Mardi Gras of 2013 in Mobile, Alabama, the birthplace of Mardi Gras (since 1703). Many "mystic" societies - organisations which parade each year, as well as performing philanthropic functions, exist both in Mobile and New Orleans. The colours of purple - representing justice, green - representing faith, and gold representing power are key to Mardi Gras. Moonpies, made by the Chattanooga Bakery in Chattanooga, Tennessee, have long been a popular "throw", along with colourful plastic beads, coins and candies.
