Monastery of Saint Naum North Macedonia Postcard

Perched on a high cliff overlooking the deep blue waters of Lake Ohrid, the Monastery of Saint Naum stands as a monumental testament to mediaeval Slavic history and Eastern Orthodox spirituality. Established around 905 AD by Saint Naum himself, a disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the monastery has long served as a vital cultural and literary centre. The heart of the complex is the Church of the Holy Archangels, which houses the tomb of Saint Naum. According to local folklore, pilgrims can still hear the saint's heartbeat if they place an ear to his tomb. Inside, the church is adorned with remarkably preserved 16th and 19th-century frescoes that depict biblical scenes and the life of the saint.
