About This Design
Mondop of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvar or Kuan-Yin Holiday Postcard
The Mondop of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara or Guanyin especially as found in Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia is not just a shrine, but a sacred space where compassion takes form in stone, gold, and silence. The word mondop (มณฑป) comes from Sanskrit mandapa, meaning “pavilion” or “hall.” In Thai temple architecture, a mondop is a square, often roofed structure that houses sacred objects: relics, scriptures, footprints of the Buddha or in this case, an image of Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion.
While known as Avalokitesvara in Sanskrit and Buddhist texts, this compassionate being is widely revered as Guanyin in Chinese tradition and deeply honored across Thailand, especially in Mahayana-influenced temples or Chinese-Thai communities.
