A small female mongoose (a relative of meercats) laps water from the ground-level bird bath from our yard in Hawaii, more relaxed than the mongoose in Rudyard Kipling's story "Rikki Tiki Tavi"since there are no snakes to battle in Hawaii. This bird bath is a popular watering hole is often the only reliable source of drinking water for local feral cats as well as mongoose families. Everyone gets along and shares. The birds also help each other out, and whenever they want a drink or a bath, there is always at least one other bird on look-out duty in the branch of the palm tree or on top of our fence.
