Monkshood Blossoms, Unalaska Island Postcard
Kamchatka aconite (Aconitum maximum Pall.) is one of two species of monkshood found on Unalaska Island. It has a limited range, being found in Kamchatka, Russia, the Aleutian Islands, and the Alaskan penninsula. The petal of the flower which forms the hood of blossom is the differing characteristic between the two species of monkshood. On the Kamchatka it is much larger and deeper. Monkshood blooms in August on Unalaska Island. It is one of the latest flowers to bloom. The plant can grow as tall as 2 and 1/2 feet and it is poisonous.
