Akmad is a legend among wildlife mothers. As an orphan orangutan, she appeared on National Geographic Magazine's cover in October 1975. Now, in her mid 40's (or older, as of May 2012) she is still having healthy babies in the wild around Tanjung Puting National Park. This photo shows Akmad with her new son. Look at the red hair hairdo on this cute infant who has just opened his eyes. A special photograph from the founder of OFI, Birute' Mary Galdikas - one of the three women sent to study great apes in the 1970's. Chosen by Dr. Louis Leakey at the same time that Dian Fossey was selected to study mountain gorillas and Jane Goodall was sent to study chimpanzees.
