A Nissl stain can delineate neurons from glia, and healthy neurons from sick. It made possible stereotaxic atlases and the stereotaxic surgery that requires them. It shows us the terrible cellular forest Neuroscience is tasked to explain. Big shot histologists will snarf derisively as they adjust their pince-nezzes with stained fingers, what with their antibodies and fluorescent labels and transsynaptic tracers, but for LabKitty's money the humble Nissl stain is pound-for-pound the most illuminating microscopic technique ever invented.
