NOT FINE IN SCHOOL - is a Facebook closed group and public page for parents and supporters of children who have struggled to attend school, or who are 'school refusers' due to anxiety disorders, unmet SEND needs, bullying, academic pressure or any other factors that influence mental health and wellbeing in school.
The name 'Not Fine in School' acknowledges the phrases uttered to so many parents - that their child is 'fine once they are in school' or 'they will be fine once they are in school' when it is clear this is NOT the case in reality. This often reflects a general lack of awareness about anxiety and how it presents in children and young people (such as 'blending' and 'masking' behaviours). The name also relates to the common threat to issue parents with fines for non-attendance, even though research shows fines and prosecutions have little effect on resolving attendance difficulties.
Our focus is on taking action in relation to school attendance difficulties - information sharing, research involvement and sharing, campaigning to raise awareness, and creating resources to support and improve understanding. We are really excited to build a community of like-minded people, and create a team who can try to make a real difference. If you have skills, knowledge or experience that could be helpful, or have a passion and desire to try and change the way our education system damages children's wellbeing, please get in touch - we would love to hear your ideas and have your input and help. We are also there to share our thoughts and experience, just to support each other with our own family situations.
