This postcard features the richly painted ceiling of the Gallery of Maps in the Vatican Museums, with fresco scenes set into elaborate late-Renaissance stucco frames. Pope Gregory XIII commissioned the 120-metre gallery, built in 1578–1580, to present a cartographic vision of the Italian peninsula and Church territories. Egnazio Danti directed the geographical program, while the vault contains fifty-one framed scenes connected with Church history and the regions mapped below.
