atoms are subatomic particles that bond in many ways to form every molecule of every chemical in the galaxy. there are 118 different known atoms. atoms are made from even smaller particles called nucleons, there are 3 different nucleons: protons(positively charged baryons), neutrons(non charged baryons), & electrons(negatively charged fundamental particle). protons & neutrons are the heaviest & sit in the core of an atom, meanwhile, the electrons are the lightest & zoom around the core, interacting with electrons of other atoms. atoms are chraacterised by the amount of protons are in their cores. hydrogens are atoms with only 1 proton & usually 1 electron, meanwhile, oxygens are atoms with 8 protons. electrons don't all share 1 path or shell, they inhabit different shells. the more outermost electrons an atom has, the further it is on the x-axis of the table, the more shells it has, the further down it is on the y-axis.
