Vintage photo of the Peristyle of the House of the Vettii, looking south from the colonnade at the north end. It is one of the most famous of the luxurious residences in the ruined city of Pompeii, Italy. The garden contains fountain basins, statuettes, and other sculptures. The columns of the peristyle are well preserved. Photo c1890 - 1900, courtesy of the LOC. The city of Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city which was mostly destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Today it has UNESCO World Heritage Site status and is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy.
