Piazza San Marco by Canaletto Socks
Canaletto, the most famous Venetian landscape painter of the 18th century, was particularly beloved by English tourists visiting the city. This splendid canvas with bright colors and well preserved depicts the famous Piazza San Marco. Here the windows of the bell tower are fewer than in reality, and the flagpoles are higher, but otherwise Canaletto faithfully reproduced the scene. The free and uneven use of color and the light tones indicate a dating towards the end of the decade 1720-30.
