August Hoen was a printmaker and inventor, patenting several processes for making halftone prints. His printmaking skills helped make A. Hoen & Co. one of the most prominent printing companies in Baltimore, MD. during the late nineteenth century. But the company's success was also due to the unnamed artists who created lithographs like this one under work for hire agreements. In this image, titled "Fresh and cold--Direct from the North Pole," polar bears are enjoying cold and frosty lagers.
