A brilliant theologian and one of the most influential Catholic thinkers of the 20th and 21st centuries, he served as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith before being elected the 265th Pope of the Catholic Church on 19 April 2005. His pontificate emphasized the harmony of faith and reason, the beauty of the liturgy, and the continuity of Christian tradition. After nearly eight years of service, he made history by resigning the papacy on 28 February 2013, becoming Pope Emeritus until his passing on 31 December 2022 at the Vatican.
