Pope Leo XIV (born Robert Francis Prevost, 14 September 1955) became the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State following the death of Pope Francis in April 2025. Prevost was elected by the papal conclave as his successor on 8 May 2025, and took the papal name Leo XIV. He is the first American pope in the history of the Catholic Church.
