After Vincent van Gogh cut off part of his ear in December of 1888 he was taken to the hospital in Arles and put in the care of Dr. Rey. Van Gogh eventually gave the portrait to Dr. Rey as a gift. About the artist: Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Post Impressionist painter whose work was most notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty, and bold color.
