Azulejos are a defining feature of Portuguese art and architecture, renowned for their intricate patterns and vivid colours—especially the signature blue and white. The word "azulejo" comes from the Arabic al-zillīj, meaning “polished stone,” a nod to the Moorish influence on Iberian design. Introduced to Portugal in the 15th century via Spain, azulejos quickly evolved into a uniquely Portuguese tradition, blending Islamic geometric motifs with Renaissance, Baroque, and later Romantic and Art Nouveau styles.
