Portuguese blue and white wall tiles with angels ceramic ornament

Portuguese blue and white wall tiles with angels ceramic ornament

Blue and white patterned tiles have become synonymous with Portugal. Portuguese wall tiles of Capela das Almas de Santa Catarina - St Catherine's Chapel - in the city of Porto, Portugal. This chapel is famous for its exterior use of azulejos of a religious nature. Capela das Almas (Church of the Soules) exterior wall is covered with blue and white tiles, more than 10,000. This chapel was remodeled in 1801 and the tiles on the exterior were only added in 1929.  The blue and white tiles have become the most dominant trend. This is a reproduction of a photo I took so you'll notice the irregular surface due to the passage of time. The tiles on the facade portray the life of two saints adored at Capela das Almas: Santa Catarina and São Francisco de Assis. These two angels and the fountain pouring water are a small portion of it. The phrase O jacto milagroso de uma fonte translates to The miraculous jet of a fountain. Above it, there's a scene representing the miracle of water. The farmer, to whom Francis lent his mule as a mount, was tormented by thirst. Water comes bubbling out of the rocks in answer to the Saint's prayer and the farmer drinks. The two Franciscans comment on the scene. This product is ideal to send/offer to a Portuguese friend, to a relative, to a Portuguese American or someone of Portuguese descent, or to someone who appreciates Portuguese traditions or the beauty of azulejos. On the back, there's an excerpt of the Prayer for Peace, St. Francis of Assisi.
