There is no tourist who visits Portugal who does not take home a rooster in their suitcase! Roosters are present in all kinds of souvenirs, keyrings, magnets, bags, towels, and t-shirts. It was from 1950 onwards that the Barcelos rooster that the world knows today became popular. It looks modern and elegant, with red hearts, a serrated tail, and a large crest. The painted red hearts are inspired by embroidery and jewellery from Minho. The rooster is associated with a legend. The miracle of saving a falsely accused pilgrim is attributed to Saint James ( São Tiago, in Portuguese) and is territorially linked to the road to Santiago of Compostela. In the Archaeological Museum of Barcelos there is a 14th-century granite cross alluding to this legend, representing the aforementioned “miracle”.
