The viewer's sight is drawn over the Lamb behind the figure, up the mountain, and gets shot by Saint John's sight line to the cruciform clouds behind him which repeat the earthly cross in a devine manner. Once visual spirituality is established it is pretty clear that El Greco is saying that the way Heaven is from the earthly cross through Christ to the spiritual cross bypassing all else.
