Pretty Sintra, Portugal Photography,Custom Travel Holiday Postcard. I took this photo in Sintra, Portugal while visiting Pena Palace (Palácio da Pena) – A Fairy-Tale Castle in Portugal. Perched high in the Sintra mountains, Pena Palace is one of Portugal’s most iconic landmarks and a true fairy-tale castle. With its vibrant colours, whimsical architecture, and breathtaking views, this palace looks like something straight out of a dream. Pena Palace in Sintra, Portugal, includes a section of the original mediaeval castle that once stood on the site (this photo I took shows aan original piece sticking out from building, can you spot it?) Before the palace was built, the location was home to the Hieronymite Monastery of Our Lady of Pena, constructed in the 16th century under King Manuel I. The monastery was mostly destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, but some of its original structures remain within the palace complex (just the photo).
