AN IMPORTANT NOTE: I received this message that I would like to forward to you, asking you DON’T PICK UP BABY DEER! “The Department of Fish and Game said that they are losing many fawns to people who "find" them by a tree, beside the road in weeds, or under brush. The people pick them up, thinking they're going to save the baby deer, then call the animal authorities or try to nurse it, and the baby always ends up dying and the people who "find" it are subject to fines and penalties. In fact, fawns are not abandoned and must not be handled. In most cases, Mamma has just left it where she thinks it is concealed while she goes to get water or draws the attention of a potential predator. Last summer, I was called on scene to try to save two spotted fawns that died because of the stress of being handled. Even on ranches where they raise fallow deer, they never handle or move the babies. And off-ranch, it's illegal”.
