Ptarmigan in Spring, Unalaska Island Postcard
Ptarmigans are a type of pheasant which live on the tundra. They can be found all over Unalaska Island in the hills and on the mountains. In summer they have a golden brown colour like a pheasant. In winter the ptarmigan turns white with just a few black markings. This ptarmigan has begun changing the colour of its feathers, so there are a lot of brown spots which are more numerous than would be present if it were in full winter colours. The small streak of red above the eye makes the head more colourful.
