Purple Wildflowers Mug - These are the flowers of the Common mallow. This plant is also known as buttonweed, cheeseplant, cheeseweed, dwarf mallow, and roundleaf mallow. It is not native to the United States, but is native to most of the Old World except sub-Saharan Africa. The common names, buttonweed, cheeseplant and cheeseweed are descriptive of the seeds, which look like little wheels of cheese... the seeds are used in some parts of the world as a substitute for rice. They grow wild in our back yard, where my husband tries his best to rip them out by the roots, because once they are established, their single taproot grows deep into the ground and is nearly impossible to remove, even with a crowbar.
