Patron saint of England since the 14th century, George was a late 3rd-early 4th century military tribune (martyred circa 303). According to legend, George heroically killed a dragon that had been terrorizing the countryside around Silena in Libya. This particular portrayal of the warrior-saint depicts him armed as a late Roman cavalryman.
