【maruniigeta】The 'igeta' design is based on the wooden frame surrounding the above-ground part of a well, resembling the character for 'well'. Originally, circular shapes were called 'izutsu', while square shapes were referred to as 'ido'. However, in heraldry, square shapes became known as 'izutsu', and diamond shapes as 'igeta'. Historically, wells were considered sacred sites where spirits dwelled and gods were worshipped, as they provided life-giving water. The design is likely rooted in these spiritual beliefs. The first recorded appearance of this crest is in 'Kenmon Shoka Mon', where the Ii clan's crest is depicted as a 'well character' design, which later evolved into the 'izutsu' crest. Other families with '井' in their surname also adopted this design as their family crest (according to 'Kamon no Jiten' by Takazawa et al.).
